Socket AM2 Definition: A CPU socket designed by AMD to allow CPUs in a system. Replaced Socket 939 and Socket 754. Released on May 23, 2006. Allows installation of the AMD Phenom, Opteron, Athlon 64 (FX, original, and X2), and the Sempron. Usage: Socket AM2 is the predecessor of AM2+ and AM3.
