Socket Definition: Somewhat similar to a household wall-mounted electrical socket, it is the receptacle in which an electronic component is placed on a motherboard or other circuit board; most commonly used to refer to a processor socket, though some traditional hobbyist electronics components also have the option of mounting in a socket as opposed to being directly soldered into the circuit, so that it can be easily removed or replaced. Not to be confused with a slot, which is used to connect discrete circuit boards such as RAM modules or graphics cards to a main circuit board. Also not to be confused with a Port, to which a cable is attached or inserted, such as a USB port or Ethernet port. Usage: Gently but firmly press the processor into the socket, and it should set right into place; excessive force my bend the connecting pins and permanently damage the processor.
