Root ID Definition: Root in IT terms generally refers to the top level directory of a file hierarchy. In Unix, the command line symbol for the root directory is (/) whereas in Windows and DOS, it is (\). Usage: A root user on Linux or Unix is a superuser who has complete administrative access to the server and all folders throughout the hierarchy.
