Processor Definition: Not to be confused with a Word Processor. A processor is the rough equivalent of the pre-frontal cortex of a computer. As the name implies, it is a computer chip that processes all of the information and data that is put through the machine, and may distribute this data to other parts of the machine for further processing. Essentially, it handles most of the computing, or "thinking", of a computer. Also known as a CPU, or Central Processing Unit, although this acronym is commonly misused to refer to the entirety of the computer itself excluding the peripherals. Notable consumer processors from Intel include the Pentium series, Celeron, Core 2 Duo (or Quad), and the new Core i7 and future i5; Also notable from AMD are the Athlon, Sempron and Phenom lines of processors. Usage: It was time to upgrade my computer when my processor could no longer keep up with the latest software. Posted by waffle911 on May 10, 2009 at 22:20:22 Pacific |
