open source Definition: A software development philosophy wherein the software is not only available free of charge in binary form (for exemple, a .exe file), but also the source code. Any open source software can be distributed and modified freely (with certain exceptions regarding proper credit, etc depending on the license). One of the prime examples of this would be the Linux kernel. Usage: Using open source software on my computer saved me money on the Microsoft Tax.
