laserdisc

Definition: First home video format to store audio and video on an optical disc. Unlike DVD, which uses MPEG-2 digital video, Laserdisc stores video in the form of analog NTSC or PAL video fields.

The very first laserdiscs contained analog audio, while newer discs had digital PCM audio. Many of the last Laserdisc releases also included digital surround sound. Laserdisc was the first home video format to make use of Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound, though the player had to support these features in order to use them. An older player would ignore the Dolby Digital/DTS track and read either the analog or digital PCM backup track instead.

Video quality on the best laserdiscs is comparable to DVD-Video, and is easily better than the VHS format that Laserdisc competed with. Laserdisc was generally considered a high-end/enthusiast format.
Usage: My 1986 Pioneer Laserdisc player still works!
