geek

Definition: A computer geek is slang for a tech enthusiast or expert. Geek generally refers to anyone who is intellectual to the point of being eccentric and a bit socially awkward.
Usage: Originally the word geek referred to a carnival freaks that would perform acts such as biting the heads off of live chickens; currently it is a term used as a badge of pride among the tech-savvy community that does not involve poultry.

geek

Definition: n. A person of generally high intelligence capable of learning detailed information about how things work, why, and often how to make, fix, or improve them with a propensity for action in those regards. (Note: this doesn't usually apply to politics, religion, or most social sciences since those favor emotion over logic.)

Geeks are often found tinkering, dismantling, fixing, or creating new things of a useful, or otherwise functional nature. Often confused with nerds, modern geeks tend to be a bit more social. They gather in groups and have discussions over fictional worlds (and the possible sciences at work therein), the benefits of "open-source", or why ninjas are obviously better since they're fast and silent...those loud, drunk, stinky pirates would never know what hit them. However, in the case of a "dysfunctional" geek, hygiene and social etiquette may be somewhat lacking. These geeks, en masse, make the various sci-fi/fantasy and anime conventions an...interesting experience.

Although geeks and nerds often share an intense passion for learning, the easiest way to tell the difference is to ask them a question. A nerd will likely sit there and explain everything down to the finest detail (unless stopped), while a geek will generally start to explain (often with metaphors), then decide it's easier just to show you.

While geeks are generally referred to in the IT field, geeks can be found anywhere there's something to tinker with, make, or fix. For instance, a mechanic that can hold a screwdriver to a running engine and tell you what's wrong (and be right) is an advanced mechanical geek. The lady that designs and makes all those incredible wedding cakes at the little shop downtown and her husband, the 5-star chef that has an amazing new dish every week, are both culinary geeks.
Usage: If want to know everything about the history of computers, call a nerd...if you just want yours to work again, call a geek.
