EMI Definition: EMI or Electro Magnetic Interference, is the occourence of an alternating magnetic field inducing erroneous data or a stray current into a data or power cable. EMI is normally not a problem in most cases. However, if there is a large alternating current being drawn through a cable in close proximity to a data cable, such as an ethernet or serial cable, it will cause interference and may cause some devices to fail. EMI can be reduced through the use of a shield, or by minimizing the area in which the interference is occouring, such as having a power and data cable intersecting perpendicularly, rather than running parelell to each other. Usage: The EMI from power cable was causing the gigabit ethernet link to drop to 100 megabit. Posted by Nimphious on August 2, 2009 at 23:58:02 Pacific |
