desktop environment Definition: A unified graphical interface for an operating system (generally, this term is used with regard to Linux). Basically, it is a platform for everything you actually see when using a computer (how windows are drawn and managed, panels/taskbars, menus, file management, and so forth). This is not to be confused with a window manager (such as openbox), which provides a much more spartan interface and is less integrated with applications. Examples of desktop environments are the GNOME, KDE, and XFCE suites for Linux. Usage: My desktop environment allows me to view multiple folders right on the desktop.
