BASIC Definition: Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code was first devised by a pair of computer instructors at Dartmouth Collage in the USA in 1964. It was originally designed to run on mainframes and to be a simpler programming language than FORTRAN, the prevailing language at the time. It had the number crunching ability of FORTRAN (FORmulaTRANsaltor) which was the technical language for laboratories and the string handling capabilities of COBOL (Common Business Orientated Language) which was the language for commercial applications. Many version of BASIC were written but the original retained the name of Dartmouth BASIC. In 1977 a little known programmer by the name of Bill Gates wrote a BASIC compiler for the Altair Micro computer. This led to the formation of a company called Microsoft. Many other version of BASIC were to follow for a variety of Micro Computers and eventually found its way onto the first IBM PC in 1981. The rest is history! Usage: BASIC is a good language to learn the basics of computer programming but is not very good for workable applications in a modern environment. BASIC Definition: The first programming language available for DOS PC in the 80s. Also, basic is a term used to refer to the base or root of something else. Usage: BASIC language has evolved a lot to the current Visual Basic version. That's a basic question. Posted by boomz on July 6, 2009 at 12:31:45 Pacific |
